Laud, William
(7 oct. 1573, Reading, Berkshire, Inglaterra–10 ene. 1645, Londres).

Arzobispo de Canterbury (1633–45) y asesor religioso de Carlos I. Se transformó en consejero del comité asesor del monarca en 1627 y obispo de Londres en 1628, y se dedicó a combatir el puritanismo e imponer el estricto ritual anglicano. Cuando fue nombrado arzobispo de Canterbury, había extendido su autoridad sobre todo el país. Atacó por peligrosa la práctica puritana de la prédica, y arrestó y mutiló a escritores puritanos como William Prynne. Ayudado por su estrecho aliado, Thomas Wentworth, 1er conde de Strafford, utilizó su ascendiente sobre el rey para influir en la política social del gobierno. En 1637, había crecido la oposición a su represión, y sus intentos por imponer el culto anglicano en Escocia provocaron una encarnizada resistencia. En 1640 se reunió el Parlamento largo y Laud fue acusado de alta traición. Su juicio, iniciado en 1644 y controlado por Prynne, culminó en su condena y decapitación.
